5 Best Fantasy Books to Read in 2023

Well, I'm not going to cheat and list my own novel because where's the fun in that? For now, Macal, Cloak, and Lalliard will have to be left to their own heartbreaking misadventures. Let's just hope the Lumar don’t find them.

While classics like "The Lord of the Rings" by J.R.R. Tolkien and "Harry Potter" by J.K. Rowling would be fantastic choices, I'll steer clear of them, as they’re already popular and already on everybody's lists.

Instead, let's explore some other fantastic options that deserve a spot on your reading list this summer. They may not exactly be hidden gems, but these classics are some of the best fantasy books for young, teen, and mature readers alike. Plus, they all hold a dear spot deep in my soul.

5. Crystal Shard: R.A. Salvatore

Kicking off our list is "Crystal Shard," a gripping fantasy novel that will transport you to a world brimming with magic, epic battles, and unforgettable characters. As the first book in the Icewind Dale Trilogy, "Crystal Shard" introduces us to iconic characters like Drizzt Do'Urden, a drow elf ranger, and Wulfgar, a barbarian warrior. Written by R.A. Salvatore, this book is part of the larger "Forgotten Realms" series, which has captivated readers for decades. Prepare to be enthralled by a tale of adventure, friendship, and the pursuit of destiny.

4. Cugel's Saga: Jack Vance

Next up is "Jack Vance Cugel's Saga," a masterpiece of fantasy literature that showcases the incredible imagination and storytelling prowess of Jack Vance. In this series, you'll follow the exploits of Cugel the Clever as he embarks on a journey across strange and wondrous lands. This is a thrilling and unpredictable ride through a world filled with danger, humor, and intricate plot twists.

3. Small Gods: Terry Pratchett (The Discworld Series)

Terry Pratchett's "Small Gods" from the renowned Discworld series secures the third spot on our list. Terry Pratchett, a beloved and talented author, crafted a fantastical world that combines satire, humor, and profound observations on life. "Small Gods" explores the nature of religion, belief, and the power of faith in a way that only Pratchett can. Every encounter I had with Terry was delightful, sincere, and funny. Fun Fact: It’s because of his influence I always scribble a little something extra when signing a novel. I always loved the little messages he would leave along with his autograph.

2. Gord the Rogue - Saga of the Old City: Gary Gygax

Coming in at number two is the "Gord the Rogue - Saga of the Old City." This series, written by the legendary Gary Gygax himself, is a must-read for any fantasy enthusiast, especially if you’re a Dungeons and Dragons fan like me. For anybody who has followed my writings and ramblings over the last 20 years, it’s not hard to imagine why this book made the list. To be able to read a character while growing up and then one day, far in the future, to be at a keyboard writing that exact character embarking on new adventures is the most wonderfully surreal feeling in the world. And to be able to do that along with Gary himself, there’s not a finer gift destiny could have given me, and I’m forever grateful for it.

The Saga of the Old City offers swashbuckling action, political intrigue, and a dash of magic, making it a must-read for any fantasy enthusiast.

1. Dragons of Autumn Twilight: Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman

Claiming the top spot on our list is the very first Dragonlance novel. This book holds a special place in my heart as it was the very first fantasy novel I ever read. It introduced me to a world of wonder, imagination, and endless possibilities. Although there might be other novels I personally enjoy more, without "Dragons of Autumn Twilight," I'm not sure if I would have ever fallen in love with fantasy literature. This enchanting tale of heroes, dragons, and a fight against darkness will captivate you from the very first page.

And there you have it—the top 5 fantasy books to read in 2023. Each of these novels will transport you to captivating worlds filled with magic, adventure, and unforgettable characters. If you're a fan of the fantasy genre, these books are sure to satisfy your craving for extraordinary tales.

Let me know if you would like the next 5 books to expand your fantasy reading list further. Happy reading!
